HL7 (Health Level 7) is a collection of standards and proposals for healthcare-specific data exchange between computer applications. Considerable efforts are being invested by governments and industry to use HL7 as part of national health IT projects. Many claims are made on behalf of HL7 by its advocates. The goal of this blog is to investigate the merits of these claims, and to provide some needed independent perspective on the HL7 project.

He is also a Research Scientist in the New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences, Director of the National Center for Ontological Research (NCOR), a principal scientist of the National Center for Biomedical Ontology (NCBO) and a Coordinating Editor of the Open Biomedical Ontologies (OBO) Foundry.

Defining definitions must follow some rules:
- the definition must be substitutable with the lemma
- the lemma can not be part of the definition
The examples given do not fulfil these obvious criteria.
Typically these are 'definitions' produced by experts in the health knowledge domain but amateurs in the field of ontology or standardisation.
